Smooth E.R. (Aria Grabowski and Jordyn Austin)
The smooth E.R. is when it is not covered in ribosomes, it is involved with the sythesis of steriods in gland cells. It also is the regulation of calcium levels in muscle cells. Another thing that the endoplasmic reticulum also regulates the breakdown of toxic substances by liver cells.
- Smooth E.R. contains enzymes that make fats, phosholipids and steriods.
- Proteins exported from the endoplasmic reticulum exit the organelle in veiscles that are budded from the smooth E.R.
- Smooth endoplasmic reticulum functions include carbohydrate metabolism, regulation of calcium ions, synthesis of steroids and lipids, drug detoxification, metabolism of steroids, and more.
- Alcoholics have more smoooth endoplasmic reticulums because it's responsible of detoxification of foreign substances.
- The smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the liver cells help detoxify drugs in the blood.
- Calcium Ions that are needed for contraction are stored in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells.
